A Polished Tale: How Carol Serves At Autumn Aged Care

Carol is a cleaner at Autumn Aged Care an aged care near me. She makes more than just countertops sparkle. For as long as she has been working at Autumn Aged Care she has served with a diligence and sincerity that has been and continues to be cherished by many of our residents.

We asked Carol what her favourite aspect of working at Autumn Aged Care is and she quite simply stated, the residence and those who live there. Sometimes the most precious things can be said in the simplest way. Without needing to write a paragraph outlining the nuances, Carol displayed her heart and what she enjoyed most, the people she serves.

Through working in close proximity Carol has had the opportunity to talk and meet most of the residents in the facility she is stationed in. Over the course of her time there she has been able to naturally and gently form friendships with the residents. In her day to day, she has had quiet and small moments with the residents. Even though these interactions aren’t big moments, as seen in movies with music and fireworks, they have the depth of what it is to be human within them, the dignity of being listened to and being able to connect. Carol speaks of how some residents have told her how much they appreciate the hard work that all the staff do. It is a cherished thing when quiet diligence and hard work is seen, appreciated and expressed. These moments are ones that we all cherish at Autumn Aged Care.

Carol describes how she started out her professional career in retail but frankly, “didn’t have the heart in it anymore”. She decided to pursue training in professional cleaning and then applied at Clovelly Cottage. She powerfully states, “I then applied at Clovelly and have never looked back, l enjoy it so much.” We can confidently say that many of the residents and Carol’s colleagues feel the same way about working alongside her! Carol’s sincerity of heart and attitude comes through in her work and relationships with residents and fellow staff. We are so grateful for these qualities that Carol brings.

Carol shares some of the stories that she hears. There is talk of wars and violence, times of tremendous hardship and struggle and she marvels at their depth of character and experience. Our seniors have countless stories and wisdom to share. Our society has yet to fully grasp the inexplicable resource that our seniors have to give us in knowledge, wisdom and narrative of the past.

Carol again gets straight to the point. What is it that keeps her and the staff going? The residents. Their basic needs met first, such as cleaning and bathing, feeding and medication but it certainly doesn’t stop there, the opportunity to have a quick catch up, to hear about what their grandchildren are up to, where they were when the war broke out, to hear, listen and contribute to their lives. Carol says regardless of position, cleaner, nurse, administrative officer, they are all united in their mission and call to look after the residents. It is easy to feel and appreciate the camaraderie, passion and kindness within the team at Clovelly Cottage.

Carol warmly jokes about how many of the residents have a good giggle at her when she dances and sings while cleaning. She hopes that one day there can be more and more music at Clovelly Cottage, she believes that music is a way to access deep memory and bring about joy in the residents. It is a treasured moment to see a senior resident be so captivated by the precious daftness of her dancing and singing that Carol readily continues in her entertaining behaviour. Music and laughter are true gifts that we can give each other as humans and we encourage Carol to keep humming and a boogie-ing along with her cleaning!

Carol says that anyone thinking of working in aged care should do it because it is the best thing to do. While we love her enthusiasm, we believe that it is because of her heart, compassion and hard work that Carol has been such a great fit for Clovelly Cottage and Autumn Care, we hope to enjoy many more moons with her alongside us in serving the residents!
